Sir Geoff Hurst and Lionesses Jess Carter and Beth England made a guest appearance at Frank Skinner and David Baddiel’s festival of remakes of their classic football anthem Three Lions, ahead of the Men’s World Cup world 2022.
His gratifying video shows Sir Geoff trading England’s kit for a Santa Claus suit, while Carter and the England team recreate the celebratory dance after winning the Football Championship European women 2022.
The video begins with the moment the Lions rush into a press conference with manager Sarina Wiegman singing the 1996 national anthem, following their win over Germany in this summer’s Euro final.
It also features Skinner and Baddiel dressed in Christmas costumes, stacked next to their younger counterparts in the original music video, singing while decorating the tree with Lioness baubles.
They sing: “Men seem cursed, whatever they try and I think I know why, they’re cursed only in July, but that’s December. The Three Lions on a sleigh, inspired by a lioness, Santa says ‘let’s play’.”
The comedians told The One Show that although their famous chorus “football is going home” has become outdated following England’s women’s win earlier this year, they will give it “extra”. again for the fanatics.”
Baddiel, 58, later said: “In the end, Mariah Carey and I decided who really was the voice of Christmas.”
While Skinner, 65, said: “We have to do it. World Cup Christmas songs are not like buses. If we let this opportunity slip away, the next one will have to wait a long time.”
The carnival anthem also has a line about drinking beer while watching the game, Skinner added: “Actually I won’t drink because I have an alcohol problem.”
Video of the day
It comes after it was announced that the sale of alcohol to fans at World Cup stadiums in Qatar had been banned – just two days before the tournament began.
FIFA said in a statement on Friday that no one attending matches may drink alcohol within the stadium grounds.
The men’s tournament, which takes place in Qatar, will run from November 20 to December 18 while England’s first match at the 2022 World Cup will be on Monday against Iran.
Three Lions was first released by Ian Broudie, frontman of Skinner, Baddiel and Lightning Seeds in 1996, becoming the main anthem at every major international soccer competition since.
