Football rumours: Forest owner considering sacking Steve Cooper after five defeats

What the newspapers say

After five straight Premier League defeats, Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis is reportedly considering a change in the managerial dugout. According to the Mail, the Greek media mogul is weighing the sacking of manager Steve Cooper along with Forest manager Dane Murphy and his recruiting staff. The club are bottom of the table and reeling after Monday night’s 4-0 defeat by Leicester. The Guardian says Forest are interested in ex-Liverpool and Chelsea boss Rafael Benitez or former Burnley manager Sean Dyche as a potential replacement.

Chelsea are apparently hoping for their second chance in pursuit of AC Milan’s Rafael Leao. The club were among those who turned down informal offers for the Portugal winger over the summer. But the star, citing reports from Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, says the Blues are currently leading the pack to sign the 23-year-old, whose contract at San Siro expires in 2024.

Cristiano Ronaldo may not be allowed to leave Old Trafford in January. The Mirror say Manchester United want to keep the 37-year-old until his contract expires next summer because they need cover at the striker where injury-prone Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial play.

A permanent move to Merseyside could be an option for Conor Coady. Everton are keen to exercise an option to convert the 29-year-old England defender’s loan from Wolves into a full transfer, the Times report, adding that the associated fee is expected to be less than £10m.
