Former 2fm star Eoghan McDermott says he’s ‘so sorry’ to his girlfriend as he confirms they’ve broken up

Former 2fm star Eoghan McDermott has revealed his split from longtime girlfriend Aoife Melia after a “devastating” 18 months.

The Dublin presenter took to social media to confirm the news following reports that he is no longer with the doctor he first started dating in 2016.

The 39-year-old said the past year and a half has been “life-changing” as he credits Dr Melia for making him a better person.

McDermott began the Instagram post saying it was “unpredictable that a private story would be made public.”

He continued: “All I can say is that the past 18 months have been devastating and life-changing in ways that I have yet to fully process. I met Aoife 15 years ago and think she was, is and will remain the most amazing person I have ever known. I’m sorry that we didn’t see our story have a happy ending and I’m sorry for the chaos that has befallen her life through no fault of her own.

“All I can do is thank her for the wonderful years together and wish her all the best in her new life.”

He added: “I have worked and improved quite a bit over the years because I wanted to live up to her standards and match her best qualities. She made me kinder, gentler, more patient, less selfish, and better in almost every measurable way. I hope she finds the happiness and peace she so deserves. “

Last year McDermott parted ways with RTÉ’s 2FM after six and a half years with the station.

The radio DJ is one of the nation’s brightest stars, having worked on radio and television since joining them in June 2014.
