Former Commons spokesman in the UK John Bercow bullied staff for ‘abuse of power’, report finds – POLITICO

LONDON – John Bercow has engaged in “severe and prolonged bullying” of staff during his time as supreme authority in the UK House of Commons, an independent report has concluded.

According to an independent committee that looked into Westminster’s most serious misconduct allegations, Bercow subjected parliamentary officials to verbal abuse and created an atmosphere of intimidation.

The former Conservative MP failed in 2019 after a decade as one of the most colorful and divisive Speakers to have held the role, reforming some of Westminster’s old practices and thwarted some of Theresa May’s efforts to get her Brexit deal done.

Twenty-one bullying complaints filed by three congressional colleagues were upheld by the panel after a nearly two-year investigation. Other complaints by a fourth official were denied.

Bercow was given an official ban and reprimand by parliament, the only sanctions available against a former MP.

He denounced the findings as a “betrayal of justice”, claiming that Congressman Kathryn Stone presided over an “amateur” investigation.

He claimed that the evidence against him was “based on malicious and malicious gossip.”

After leaving parliament, Bercow became an open critic of Brexit and Boris Johnson.

He was nominated for an election by former Labor leader Jeremy Corbyn, but it was blocked because of the ongoing investigation into his conduct, making him the first Speaker in 230 years not to be elected. House of Commons. He later joined the Labor Party.

The charges upheld were brought by Robert Rogers, a former Commons secretary, and former private secretary, Kate Emms and Angus Sinclair.

David Leakey, who held the important ceremonial role of the Black Rod while Bercow was the Speaker, denied his claims.
