WELL-KNOWN, former politician Noel Treacy has died aged 70, it has been announced.
Former lover Fianna Fail TD has a political career spanning nearly three decades, representing the East Galway constituency.
He served as a junior minister in the government in many departments including finance, children, transport and European affairs.
He first won a seat in Dail Eireann in a 1982 by-election and successfully held his seat in seven general elections before retiring in 2011.
Tributes from the political circles were paid to Mr. Treacy after news of his death.
Taoiseach and Fianna Fail leader Michael Martin, who led the demonstrations, described him as an “outstanding” politician.
He said: “It is with great sadness that Noel Treacy, a good friend and outstanding Minister, TD and Councilor has passed away.
“He cares deeply for his community and country, serving with both energy and commitment. Deepest sympathies with his wife Mary, children Joan, Emer, Lisa and Rory. “

Fine Gael TD for Galway East Ciaran Cannon said: “Sorry to hear of the passing of Noel Treacy, one of our longest-serving TDs, a gentleman who cared deeply about those he represented.
“He is the best example in public service and exceptionally talented. May he RIP. My deepest sympathies go to his family.”
Former TD Colm Keaveney described Mr Treacy as a “political giant”, saying: “Rest In Peace Noel Treacy – former Minister and TD for Galway-East.
“A political giant with unparalleled generosity and dedication to the people of Galway.
“My condolences to the Treacy family on the sad passing of Noel. A strong and lovely man has passed away.”
Fianna Fail MEP Barry Andrews added: “Very sad to hear that former colleague of @fiannafailparty Noel Treacy has passed away.
“Noel was a gentleman, an advocate for his voters in Galway and a brilliant politician. My thoughts are with Mary and his family, may he rest in peace.”
Born in Ballinasloe, Co Galway in 1951, Mr. Treact worked as an auctioneer and provincial financial services manager before entering politics.
He is survived by his wife Mary, four children and grandchildren.
