Monday was dubbed “Passport Renewal Day” after the Home Office warned of 10-week waits for renewals ahead of the summer.
Four and a half million British holidaymakers risk having their travel plans abandoned because they do not have a valid passport when they leave due to the long delays.
May 9 is the final date for a 10-week passport renewal for those looking to jet away on July 18, the week many schools in England and Wales begin to separate for the summer.
Co-op Travel said demand for insurance has doubled in recent months as passengers have been asked to check their documents.
Figures from the Passport Office show that almost 7% of the UK’s total population will have their documents expire before July 18, the week when many schools in England and Wales begin to separate for the summer.
Having your passport checked by May 9th would mean that all new documents would arrive in time for your escape.

Traveling without a valid passport is against the law and most European countries now require UK travelers to have a passport valid for at least three months from the date they intend to leave the EU country they are visiting.
Some destinations require your passport to have been issued within the last 10 years.
Graham Ward-Lush, Tour Manager at Co-op Insurance, said: “Many of us will not have had a proper summer holiday since 2019 and we know millions of Britons across the country are particularly eagerly awaiting this year’s short break given the majority of travel restrictions have since been repealed.
“But with many passports sitting in a drawer over the last two years, we urge travelers to check the expiry date on their own passports and those of family members as well today.
“Many families in England and Wales will be looking to get away at the end of July, which means May 9 is a good deadline to set yourself to ensure new documents come back in time.
“There can’t be a more heartbreaking scenario than digging up a passport the night before you travel, only to find it’s out of date. We want to help ensure that people across the UK can have their dream holiday this summer and not be stuck at home with invalid travel documents!”
Passport renewals cost £75.50 online or £85 by post and can be done digitally via the government’s online service or via the Post Office’s check and mail service.
