Fox News colleague recalls Irish cinematographer Pierre Zakrzewski’s tenacity and “childlike joy”.

Irish photojournalist Pierre Zakrzewski was fondly remembered by a former fellow war correspondent as a gentle man with a “childlike joy”.

ierre, 55, was killed last week while collecting news for Fox News’ Sunday Night In America, for which the Leopardstown, Co Dublin native had covered many wars.

Fox News’ Steve Harrigan reported alongside Pierre from many conflict zones and said it “burns to see photos of him” as it reminds him of “how much joy he had”.

“He’s a guy who’s gone to terrible places but still never lost that childlike joy, and he made you happy just being around him,” Mr Harrigan said in one Tribute broadcast by the news organization.

“I was with him in Congo once and we were in a UN building that was overrun and we got separated. The building got hit and I thought they were going to come in and kill us. I didn’t think about where Pierre was because he was a man so skilled and experienced that he didn’t need to be worried about. When I saw him crawling out of an armored truck the next morning, he just shook his hair and mustache, smiled at me and went straight to the next patch.”

Mr Harrigan also remembered Pierre for being “strong and tough”. Steve recalled a trip from north to south Afghanistan that was a grueling three day drive through all types of terrain.

“I told this story and was proud of myself for making it in three days. Pierre said from a corner of the room, ‘Yeah, it’s pretty tough on horseback too,'” Mr Harrigan recalled.

“He was just so many levels above me. It just summed up Pierre for me: I was in a jeep and he was on a horse; the better man.”

A graduate of UCD, Mr. Zakrzewski has worked for both Fox and Sky News. His remains have yet to be repatriated as Irish officials are working with his two former employers to get his body to Kraków, Poland, and then to Dublin.
