It takes compassion and a genuine desire to help people work with the homeless community – and Joseph Shaw has those qualities and more. He’s also homeless himself, so he knows how difficult it can be. Joseph used to work in the construction trade but he is a natural person who wants to help those in need, so he is a regular volunteer at homeless shelters. reside in Brockton, Massachusetts.
He cares about vulnerable people and takes the time to sit down with them and talk about their problems. Everyone took note of how the 44-year-old instinctively knew when people needed support.
It was through his volunteer work that he met Kathryn Podgurski in 2017. The 33-year-old was homeless but after they started dating, she moved into Joseph’s apartment. People who know Podgurski say that she is very nice but she is very short-tempered.
After they lived together for a few weeks, Joseph’s family was concerned that they hadn’t seen him for several days. He already has three children from a previous relationship and he is unlikely to disappear without telling anyone.
On July 17, they announced Joseph missing. When the police investigated, no one could think where he went.
As the family walked around his third-floor apartment, Podgurski wouldn’t let them in. Other times when they come back, there won’t be an answer – and in one, Podgurski starts crying and says she doesn’t know where he is. to be.
The community gathered together to find Saint Joseph. Then, on the night of July 21, police received a call from a relative of Podgurski. They have some shocking information they want to share that could potentially explain why he disappeared.
The informant alleges that Podgurski sent them a text message saying that two men looking for money and drugs had come to Joseph’s apartment to rob. They said Podgurski claimed raiders killed Joseph for making too much noise and then asked her to clean up the blood and hide his body.
Relatives involved sent police to the Elm Court hotel, where Podgurski was hiding. When the officers got there, she was not found inside, but when they left, she planted a flag for them in the street.
Podgurski tells the officers to come to Joseph’s apartment – and says they need to look in the closet.

Stabbed more than 42 times
The first thing the police noticed when they approached Joseph’s apartment was the strong stench of a decomposing body. Inside, they found his remains, stacked in a closet. He was buried under a number of items such as clothing, some bedding and a chair.
He has also been covered with a layer of cat poop – presumably in an attempt to absorb oozing bodily fluids and combat the odor. It was a truly horrifying discovery.
Joseph was stabbed more than 42 times and then partially dismembered. Officers could not find one of his legs and one of his arms. It is clear that he has been dead for a long time and he must be identified by his tattoos.
The mattress on the bed was overturned and there was a considerable amount of blood seeping into it, as if Joseph’s body was lying on it while bleeding profusely.
Investigators have a complicated case in hand. Who broke into Joseph’s house? Why are they targeting him? And although Podgurski claims she was terrified that her attackers would come back and kill her if she spoke, why didn’t she call the police? Instead, why would she live with her boyfriend’s dead body for a week?
Joseph’s devastated loved ones held a candlelit vigil for him outside his apartment. He gave so much to others – and now he has been murdered in his own home. There were personal messages of grief and mourners gathered to pay their respects.

From the outset, it was clear Podgurski would face legal consequences of some kind for his actions. She was supposed to report the assault, so she was charged with a secondary charge after the fact of murder.
But when the case was investigated, there was no indication that anyone else had been in the apartment and there was no sign of a break-in. Joseph’s attack and wounds also seem unnecessarily brutal for a spontaneous murder during a robbery – instead, they show signs of a personal attack.
Claims began to happen that Joseph and Podgurski were unhappy in their relationship. A police report said that a witness recounted that Joseph had told them Podgurski was pregnant and that he was not happy about it. However, there is no evidence that she was pregnant.
Family’s grim discovery
Other witnesses said they heard the argument, while one claimed Joseph told Podgurski he wanted her to move out.
Later that month, when Podgurski appeared in court, she was charged with murder and was not released on bail. The prosecution said there was no “robbery” and accused her of killing Joseph and trying to cover it up.
When the court learned the gruesome details of how Podgurski had dissected Joseph, it was the first time some in his family had heard of his mutilation. They suffered so much that many ran from the court crying.

After the hearing, relatives went to Joseph’s apartment to collect some of his belongings. While they were there, Joseph’s niece Jacinda Shaw discovered a backpack with blood stains on the zipper. She noted that it was very heavy when she picked it up and placed it on the bed. Looking inside the backpack they found, to Joseph’s absolute horror, Joseph’s missing lower leg.
Jacinda told local media: “When I opened the bag, his foot popped out. “There was another bag that we assumed was his arm. We couldn’t figure out why the police couldn’t find it. It was clearly seen. Joseph’s body parts were sent to the medical examiner’s office and the police department was criticized for not examining the crime scene thoroughly.
In December of last year, Podgurski was finally brought to trial. She pleaded not guilty, which meant the jury decided whether she told the truth about the mysterious attackers.
Prosecutors told the court it was Podgurski who stabbed Joseph repeatedly, mutilated his body and then hid it in a closet.
The medical examiner said Joseph’s left leg was severed below the knee while his right arm was severed below the elbow.
They determined that none of the stab wounds were fatal and that Joseph was most likely “bleeding”. Meaning he had a chance to be saved if Podgurski had called for help.
Instead, she used cat feces to soak up the blood spilled from her boyfriend’s body and used disinfectants to try to cover up the odor.
Relatives even heard Podgurski spray something before she opened the door for them while they searched for him.
Prosecutors say she dismembered Joseph’s body because she was trying to dispose of his body in pieces.
Concluding the five-day trial, the jury deliberated for 15 hours before concluding Podgurski guilty of first-degree murder.
In the same month, Podgurski, 38, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. She continues to assert her innocence – so Joseph’s family will never know why she killed him.
They had to simply live with the knowledge that good Joseph had met his worst and most terrible end at the hands of one of the people he had tried to help.
