In a statement Monday night, the French Foreign Ministry said the operation, which was “carried out by Russian intelligence agencies” on French territory, had been dismantled. The Russian covert operation was discovered on Sunday, the day of the first round of the French presidential elections.

The Russian agents were declared persona non grata and the deputy of the Russian embassy was called to the ministry on Monday evening.

on TwitterFrench Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin praised a “remarkable counterintelligence” and congratulated the DGSI, which “guards our fundamental interests”. He confirmed that the Russian agents involved will have to leave the country.
