Frank Lampard is charged by the English FA over comments on the Merseyside derby
Everton boss Frank Lampard has been charged by the Football Association after speaking out after his side’s defeat in last month’s Merseyside derby.
Ampard claimed Liverpool would have been awarded a free-kick if Mohamed Salah had gone down like Anthony Gordon in a tackle that referee Stuart Attwell would not have penalized.
Gordon, who had been cautioned for diving in the first half at Anfield, fell after an apparent contact from Joel Matip but Attwell neither missed a penalty nor was he shown a second yellow card.
The Toffees then contacted the Professional Game Match Officials Board for the second time that season with concerns about the decision.
Lampard said in his post-match interview: “It’s a penalty for me. You can’t get them here. If that was Mo Salah on the other end, he gets a penalty. I don’t try to create conflict; It’s just the reality of football.
“I’ve played in teams in the top half of the league – you get it. That was definitely a penalty. That is a clear foul.”
The FA took offense at these comments, citing an implication of “bias and/or attacking the integrity of the match umpire or umpires generally”.
An FA statement read: “Frank Lampard has been charged with breaching FA Rule E3 in relation to post-match media comments he made following Everton FC’s Premier League match against Liverpool FC on Sunday 24 April. April, gave up.

“It is alleged that the manager’s comments constitute inappropriate behavior as they imply bias and/or attack the integrity of the match umpire – or umpires in general – and/or bring the game into disrepute, contrary to FA Rule E3.1.
“Frank Lampard has until Monday May 9, 2022 to respond.”
In March, following another official complaint, the club received an apology from PGMOL boss Mike Riley after Rodri was not awarded a handball in the home loss to Manchester City.
On that occasion, referee Paul Tierney was blindsided and the VAR, Chris Kavanagh, ruled there was insufficient evidence the ball had struck the City midfielder in the arm, although television footage was fairly conclusive.
