Border guard Roman Hrybov’s act of defiance on Snake Island, where he told a Russian warship to “damn himself,” was shown around the world and has become a symbol of the Ukrainian resistance
A Ukrainian border guard who refused to surrender to a Russian warship and told it to fuck off was awarded a medal for service in a prisoner exchange after his release.
Roman Hrybov was stationed with 13 other soldiers on tiny Snake Island in the Black Sea when he refused to surrender despite being outnumbered and being bombarded by the Russians from sea and air.
When they were ordered to lay down their arms, Hrybov’s response was broadcast around the world by radio, “Russian warship, fuck yourself.”
It was initially feared that the soldiers had died when the radio recording was suddenly interrupted, but it was later revealed that some had survived and been captured.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy initially said that all soldiers would receive medals posthumously.
He later said in an interview that “some of the soldiers died, some were taken prisoner.”
Now Hrybov has been brought back from the city of Cherkassy in exchange for sailors on a Russian ship captured by Ukrainian forces on March 25.
A video from the Cherkasy Regional State Administration shows the head of the regional administration, Igor Taburets, presenting him with an award.
Hrybov said: “I would like to say a big thank you to the Ukrainian people for this support. We feel this support very much, it inspires us.”
In addition, Taburets said that the border guard was “an example” for other Ukrainians.
“I think Ukraine should really know its heroes and Cherkassy should know its heroes,” he said.
“The most important thing is that despite moral pressure, he survived despite everything and will be a role model for our Ukrainians and the people of Cherkassy.”
News of the Hrybov’s refusal to surrender, as well as other early exploits, including a soldier who blew himself up along with a bridge to slow the advance of Russian tanks, spurred Ukrainian resistance, despite spurring on the Russians was outnumbered.
Cities like Kharkov and Mariupol have been devastated by Russian shelling, but people are refusing to surrender.
According to recent reports from Mariupol, thousands of civilians may have died, the head of the United Nations Human Rights Mission said on Tuesday.
Those who remain suffer from little food and water.
“We are eight people. We have two buckets of potatoes, one bucket of onions,” said Irina, an engineer, in her apartment where the windows had been blown out.
Elsewhere, Ukrainian forces have advanced and recaptured areas on the outskirts of Kyiv, to the north-east and to the south from Russian forces.
In the southern city of Mykolaiv, a rocket blasted a hole through the main administrative building. At least 12 people were killed and 33 injured, according to authorities.
