French elections preview – Orbán’s victory – Transparency International Ukraine – POLITICO

We look ahead to this Sunday’s presidential election in France, discuss recent Western reactions to Russia’s war in Ukraine, and reflect on the re-election of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. Our special guest is Kateryna Ryzhenko from Transparency International Ukraine.

Elisa Braun from POLITICO in Paris is leading the first round of the French presidential elections together with Andrew Gray. She explains sentiment in the Macron camp as the president seeks re-election despite headwinds including a lackluster campaign, a strong performance by far-right leader Marine Le Pen and uproar over his government’s use of consulting firms to develop policies.

POLITICO’s Matthew Karnitschnig investigates in Berlin whether the West is moving closer to energy sanctions against Moscow after convicting Russian forces of war crimes over the killing of Ukrainian civilians in the city of Bucha.

And POLITICO’s Lili Bayer unpacks how Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and his right-wing populist Fidesz party managed to win such a decisive victory in last Sunday’s elections. Lili also explains the EU’s subsequent move to launch a process that could cut funds to Hungary over rule of law concerns in the country.

Kateryna Ryzhenko, deputy general secretary of the Ukrainian branch of the anti-corruption watchdog Transparency International, tells us what she is asking EU politicians to do to help her country – now and after the war.

Programming note: Host is Andrew Gray a live recording from EU Confidential on Twitter at 22:00 CET on Sunday with our team in France to break down the results of the first round of the French presidential election.
