French presidential election debate – POLITICO

French President Emmanuel Macron and far-right leader Marine Le Pen face each other on Wednesday in a crucial televised debate ahead of voting in the second round of Sunday’s presidential election.

The televised debate is a mainstay of the French election campaign, in which the two top candidates from the first round go head-to-head in a contest moderated by journalists.

While polls show the president has a strong lead ahead of Sunday’s crucial vote, the gap between the incumbent and his challenger is much narrower than it was in 2017, when they fought a similar duel.

Back then, Macron smashed Le Pen in an episode that left deep scars on the far-right leader. While Le Pen has to turn the page, Macron must defend his track record at the Elysée, which is expected to come under intense scrutiny.
