A close friend of Oleksandr Zavhorodniy, 45, who recently died in Ukraine, said he was buried in a place called “Avenue of Heroes”.
leksandr Zavhorodniy (45), known to his friends as Alex, died on March 30 when the Donbass region in eastern Ukraine was heavily bombed.
The separated father of two has been in Ireland for more than 20 years and worked at Aldi in Sandyford where he was assistant manager.
He was living in a rented flat in Stillorgan before traveling back to Ukraine last month.
Alex Cucuet, a Dublin bus driver, said he became friends with Mr Zavhorodniy eight years ago.
“We’ve been friends ever since and we go out and have fun and stuff like that,” he said.
“[Oleksandr] was a super energetic, fun person. Always the first to see everything that needs to be organized.”
Speaking of RTÉ Tomorrow Ireland Mr Cucuet did not want to go into detail about the circumstances surrounding his friend’s death, but he did confirm that Mr Zavhorodniy was killed by “heavy gunfire”.
He said a close friend of Oleksandr Zavhorodniy was contacted by his grandmother, who informed him that Mr Zavhorodniy had been killed.
“Yesterday was actually his funeral and we sort of managed to sort it out and make it happen. Even though the place isn’t livable, the place doesn’t look pretty at all, we still managed to bury it in a place called Alley of Heroes,” he said.
Mr Cucuet said he would keep in touch with Oleksandr until March 22, when he left all social media.
“I was in contact with him via WhatsApp. He would send me funny pics to make everyone laugh even though we were worried, he would send us pics of guns and the food he was eating and the place he was and so on,” he said.
Mr Cucuet added that he was worried for his friend when he returned to Ukraine but everyone understood why he had to go.
“We were all concerned but at the same time after everything that happened we kind of understand what was in his heart and I think every single type of person in his situation would act more or less the same way. Honestly, I would do the same.”
