A local mother said she “just kept thinking it was going to explode” and recalled walking out of the store to find the burning car just yards from her vehicle where her 10-year-old daughter was waiting
The public were terrified after two masked people were seen setting a car on fire in a local supermarket car park.
The incident took place outside an Asda store in Leek, Staffordshire, on June 13 and involved two men who reportedly doused the vehicle with a flammable liquid before setting it on fire. reports Stoke-on-Trent Live.
The two men, who were said to be wearing “Halloween masks,” were seen fleeing the scene.
A local mother described walking out of the store to find the car ablaze just meters from her vehicle where her 10-year-old daughter was waiting.
The woman, who chose not to be named, said: “My daughter had been sent home sick from school so she waited in the car while I hurried into Asda to get some Calpol for her. I was only a few minutes, but when I came out, a car parked nearby was fully engulfed in flames, black smoke was coming out.
“I ran to my car and backed up as far as I could. It was so scary. At first I thought something went wrong with the car and it caught fire, but then my daughter told me that she saw what happened.
“She said she saw two men with rubber face masks and hoods on coming around the back of our car. They had a liquid that they poured all over the car and set it on fire. She said they saw her sitting in our car but they went ahead anyway. I must have gotten out of Asda shortly after it happened.”
The flames reportedly spread to an overhanging hedgerow and were dangerously close to neighboring homes.
Witnesses said a group of local firefighters happened to be in the Asda store at the time, so the fire was quickly tackled and extinguished
But the dramatic incident shocked many locals.
“It’s scary to think what could have happened,” the mother said, noting that her daughter had given a statement to police. “I always thought it was going to explode. There were a lot of people around and other cars in the parking lot. It was amazing.”
Police are investigating and are asking witnesses to get in touch.
A spokesman said: “We responded together with the Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service to a vehicle on fire at Asda on Springfield Rd at 1pm on June 13. We’re asking for witnesses and dashcam footage.
