WE all need a variety of vitamins and nutrients to stay healthy.
But when your balance of certain essential vitamins is a little off balance, you may experience symptoms like blurry eyes and numbness.
Vitamin E is an important nutrient as it helps protect our cells from damage, boosts your immune system and also prevents blood from clotting.
It is particularly important as it supports the body’s natural defenses against disease and infection and maintains healthy skills and eyesight.
Women need about 4 mg of vitamin E in their diet daily, while men should consume 3 mg.
That NHS states that you should be able to get all the vitamin E you need from your diet, and that any vitamin E that isn’t used immediately will be stored in your body — meaning you won’t have to eat every day.
Most people are well nourished and are not vitamin E deficient.
It’s a condition usually limited to people who have trouble digesting or absorbing nutrients from their food.
If you are deficient, there are important signs and symptoms that you may experience.
If you’re not getting enough vitamin E, your muscles could be subject to oxidative stress, said Dr. Kristen Elizabeth Holtz.
Speak with insider She explained that this is when there is an imbalance of antioxidants in your body, with the stress leading to muscle weakness.
dr Holtz said that a lack of vitamin E can sometimes cause peripheral neuropathy.
This leads to numbness in hands and feet.
She said, “This happens because it damages nerve fibers, which can prevent them from properly transmitting signals.”
3. Problems with coordination
Another side effect of vitamin E deficiency is coordination problems, said Dr. Holtz.
Because it can cause certain nerve cells in the brain that are crucial for movement control to be broken down.
4. Visual disturbances
If you’re not getting enough vitamin E, said Dr. Holtz that the light receptors in your retina can become damaged – leading to blurry vision over time.
5. Weakened immune system
When the immune system isn’t working properly, your body has a harder time fighting off infection and disease.
dr Holtz said vitamin E is key to supporting the body’s immune system by helping the growth of T cells, which help fight infection.
If you’re concerned about not getting enough vitamin E, then there are many foods you can add to your diet that will help.
The NHS says foods like vegetable oils, including rapeseed, sunflower, soybean, corn and olive oil, are all great sources of vitamin E.
Nuts and seeds also help with daily intake of the vitamin, as does wheat germ, which is found in grains and grain products.
