Playing intimate gigs is nothing new for the singer; In 2015 he also played a “surprise concert” on Vicar Street before his nights in Croke Park.

“I think it’s the best venue in Europe in terms of intimacy,” he told RTÉ Radio 1 yesterday. “It’s a big venue, but when you play the show you can see everyone at any time, it’s not like like there are many different floors.”

Dingle Bay, Kerry

Ed said in a chat with Ireland.com that his favorite place in Ireland is Dingle Bay in Kerry.

With stunning views and a beautiful city full of pubs and great food, it’s the perfect tourist destination, he says.

However, he added that he would recommend that anyone looking to move to Ireland settle in Wexford, where his grandparents are from.

The Hacienda Bar, Dublin

Ed has visited Dublin’s Hacienda Bar many times including after his performances at Croke Park in 2015 and before appearing on The Late Late Show in 2017.

He has also frequented many other pubs in the capital, including Doyle’s on Fleet Street and Fitzgerald’s in Sandycove, and said after his many visits to Dublin he would go home without a voice.

“I remember 2011, 2012, 2013, whenever I came to Ireland my voice was destroyed,” he said.

“I would basically go to a pub, do a session, sing along in a pub for four hours and do the same thing the next day and end up doing the show.”

Whelans, Dublin

Whelan holds a very special place in Ed’s heart because that’s where he chose to be a singer-songwriter.

“I went to this concert and I saw a guy with an acoustic guitar controlling an audience and in that moment I realized that if I work hard enough I can do it, so it was nice to go back there.

“I go back there to hang out anyway – they drink a good Guinness – but it’s also a great music venue.”

City of Cork

After his sold-out 2018 gig at Páirc Uí Chaoimh, Ed said it was his favorite Irish gig of all time.

The Englishman, wearing a Cork GAA jersey, said the atmosphere surpassed even his concert in Dublin and described Cork City as one of his favorite places in Ireland.
