From floods Down Under to droughts in Europe, the weather has just changed

A scene in Peter Weir’s brilliant mystery drama The Last Wave depicts strange weather phenomena across rural and urban Australia, from powerful hailstones falling in the desert to torrential rain on city streets. The poster for the film asks, “Wasn’t the weather weird? Could it be a warning?”

The film, released in 1977, depicted a world at odds with the weather. Fast-forwarding decades later, we seem to disagree—and no fiction needed. From flooding in Australia to the driest conditions in 1,200 years in the Iberian Peninsula, rainfall is fast becoming a problem around the world, from too much to too little.
