FSAI warns children under 4.5 years old not to drink rice milk

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) has warned that infants and young children, under 4.5 years of age, should not use rice milk as a substitute for cow’s milk, breast milk or infant formula.

Mr. FSAI had previously issued warnings about rice milk, due to findings indicating low levels of inorganic arsenic found in rice milk.

Authorities say they have noticed that a rice and milk-based infant formula called “Prémibio Prémiriz” is available for purchase online via the co.uk website.

It said such infant formulas were “not legally authorized” for sale on the European market, as they did not meet “legitimate nutritional and compositional requirements for infants”. born”.

FSAI has confirmed that it is contacting the authorities in the UK and other EU member states to stop selling this product in Europe from this website.

Authorities said they are also contacting the relevant hospitals and public health experts to inform about the online sale.

FSAI CEO Dr Pamela Byrne said the product should not be put on the European market.

“Rice-based infant formula and subsequent formula cannot be legally sold on the European market, as they do not meet the nutritional requirements of infants. Additionally, there is a concern around inorganic arsenic content in rice-based products intended for children,” she said.

“FSAI is aware of published studies that have previously detected low levels of inorganic arsenic in rice milk and recommends that infants and young children aged 4.5 years and under should not be exposed to this product.

“Arsenic exists in the environment and can therefore be present in many foods, including rice, at low levels. The toxicity of arsenic depends on the form in which it is present, whether it is organic or inorganic.

“The inorganic form is the more toxic form and the FSAI states that exposure to this form should be kept as reasonable as possible. As a precaution, to reduce inorganic arsenic exposure, parents and guardians should not give these foods to infants and children up to 4.5 years of age.
