Premier League: Five essential tips for your fantasy team

Follow live coverage as Liverpool travel to Fulham for the opening weekend of the 2022/23 Premier League season.

Just a point and a place behind Manchester City in last season’s title race, Jurgen Klopp’s Reds begin their battle on Saturday midday, this time going one better against newly-promoted Cottagers.

Centre-back Ibrahima Konate has joined an injury list that already includes Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (hamstring), Diogo Jota (hamstring), Curtis Jones (calf), second-choice goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher (groin) and Kostas Tsimikas (knock) as well as Naby Keita is missing. For the hosts, Marco Silva will sign summer signing Joao Palhinha for his Premier League debut, while Aleksandar Mitrovic, top scorer in last year’s league, will hope to pick up where he left off as they try to avoid relegation.

Klopp plays against Fulham

Jurgen Klopp explained what it’s like to face a promoted team like Fulham on the first day of the season.

“Fulham is doing really well and did very well last year. Yes, moving up through playing football is one of the hardest things about the league for me,” he said. “They all play football but are a real football team [with] more possessions [and] all these things. Set pieces are important but not the main thing so it deserves all my respect and that’s exactly what Fulham did.

“They were a really good team. Fabio [Carvalho] was an important part of this team. Harry [Wilson] is an important part of this team. I think he’s injured, so obviously things like that are difficult.

“A week before we play a team, or a couple of days before that, I read a little bit about them, not just watched matches but read a little bit about them and then you see.

“I think they still have some problems to solve in the transfer market, but I’m not sure [it’s the] Third for sure, or maybe the fourth time in a row that we’ve played against last season’s champions, who always face their opponents with confidence. Now it’s gone.

“Fulham, they’re definitely going to be tough, [it] becomes a completely different game. I’m glad we played the City game to be honest because we got a little hint [at] where we are. But it’s a completely different game and we have to be prepared for that.”

Fulham vs Liverpool

Liverpool have won their last three Premier League games despite conceding the opening goal within the first 15 minutes each time – only Arsenal have ever won four consecutive Premier League games in March 2012 after coming from behind.

The Reds have won their first Premier League game in each of the last four seasons, scoring at least three goals each time.

Is the Premier League too big to fail or could it fall?

A few months ago some of the top figures in European football were in England for a meeting and the talks naturally revolved around the Premier League ‘product’. There was admiration, but also anger.

A sentiment shared that night, and increasingly resonating across the continent, is that England’s elite competition is now “so arrogant” that it would “be great if it fell”.

In a way, one could not have a greater indication of the power of the Premier League than such resentment. The Camp Nou were pleased with how Barcelona have beaten Chelsea against both Raphinha and Jules Kounde this summer because that’s the way it should be.

Fulham scored 106 league goals en route to winning the 2021-22 league title. Each of their last three Premier League campaigns have ended in relegation – 2013-14, 2018-19 and 2020-21.

Marco Silva is hoping for a different result this year.

Martin Tyler has lashed out after apparently linking the Hillsborough disaster to incidents involving football hooligans

Sky Sports commentator Martin Tyler has been widely criticized after appearing to have linked the Hillsborough disaster to “other hooligan-related issues” while speaking on BBC radio.

A total of 97 fans died as a result of the scrum that took place at Sheffield Wednesday Stadium on 15 April 1989 after attending an FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest.

The 1990 Taylor Report investigating the tragedy ruled that a crowd control failure by South Yorkshire Police (SYP) was the main reason for the deaths, while a coroner’s inquiry between 2014 and 2016 ruled these supporters unlawfully killed were and that the behavior of the fans had no contribution to the disaster.

Jurgen Klopp attributes Mohamed Salah’s loss of form to Afcon disappointment

Jurgen Klopp believes Mohamed Salah’s goals dried up at the end of last season because he was drained from Egypt’s defeat in the Africa Cup of Nations final.

Salah has scored 31 goals in a season in which he was named PFA Player of the Year and Footballer of the Year, but only three in his last 16 games.

Klopp believes the forward has had an incredibly intense season, including 51 appearances for his club, two games in a World Cup play-off and all seven Africa Cup of Nations games, four of which went into extra time.
