The scale of price increases of the most famous British brands has been shown today by research.
The comparison website Trolley.co.uk tracked the cost of nearly 24,500 products sold in supermarkets.
Its new Grocery Price Index shows an average gain across a group of items of 1.6% over 12 months.
However, that increase in masks is much larger for many individual products.
For example, a jar of Dolmio bolognese sauce has grown by more than 15% since last February.
Kellogg’s Variety Pack cereal and a jar of Nescafe Original instant coffee both increased by nearly as much.
Some items only increase a few pence, such as the Kingsmill white soft loaf. But that adds up because bread is often bought often.
Certain items, Silver Spoon sugar, certain Pringles flavors and Richmond pork sausage, have actually dropped in price over the past year.
The Daily Mirror has selected a number of items that might be in a typical weekly store. We found that groceries cost £4.90 now more than a year ago, up from £54.30 to £59.20.
Several major food companies have recently warned of higher prices.
Unilever, the maker of Marmite and Pot Noodles, says its costs have risen by £3 billion.
Nestle, which makes KitKat, said it raised prices.
And Reckitt, whose products include Harpic, Nurofen and Strepsils, recently revealed its costs jumped 11% last year.
“Major brand owners are facing an important test,” said Danni Hewson, financial analyst at investors AJ Bell.

“Consumers may not be able to keep raising prices so quickly. There is a risk that they are less likely to buy well-known and expensive brands.”
Saeed Ibrahim, a spokesman for Trolley.co.uk, said two in three brands increase in price in a year.
He added: “If this trend continues, the negative impact this could have on families could be huge by the end of 2022.”
