Funcom’s Dune Survival Game Get Dutch Studio Compendium for technical and gameplay development

Collaboration between German developer Nukklear and Funcom is coming Open world, multiplayer survival game based on Sand dunes IP now has another partner: Dutch developer Abstraction. Abstraction is available for working on engine-level systems, rendering, platform support, and other parts of the development process.

Dune is in the works as the IP is getting new attention after the movie comes out in 2021 (and a second part is coming). This should make things familiar enough to a potential audience, and Funcom is ready. The initial partnership with Nukklear was originally announced in December and builds on Funcom’s 2019 agreement to create a game with Dune IP. Inspiration for this game will from Conan Exiles, and combines Funcom’s expertise across several systems and past multiplayer titles. Nukklear’s experience with the vehicle game is also cited, giving us some potential insight into what to expect.

Abstraction comes on board as more of a tech-enabled role, with some gameplay elements. In a statement announcing the new partnership on Dune, Abstraction’s role is described as:While a large part of the Abstract team focused on engine work to optimize performance, various members integrated into other existing teams working on the project within Funcom to help develop the Main features in the game. Other specific aspects of work on Sand dunes including AI, sound, animation and physics.

With the above announcements, Funcom seems to have rounded the development path of the survival game. Funcom is very busy with Sand dunes IP and many more IPs the company currently controls. Dune: Spice Wars is an upcoming RTS title is in development and we already know some playable houses there, Atreides and Harkkonnen, with early access plan.
