Fundraiser by Brighton man to prevent family return to Ukraine

To help a mother and her two children stay with their host family instead of returning to Ukraine, a FUNDRAISER has been launched.

Valeria Galich, 28, fled her home in Dnipro when war broke out in March this year.

She and her two children, Kira, five, and Nikita, one, were taken in by a host in Poland.

Due to the lack of funds from the Polish government to take in refugees, they can no longer afford to have Valeria and the children in their home.

Now Valeria is forced to return to her war-torn homeland on August 15 if she cannot secure a new home in Poland.

Paul Griffith, 41, from Brighton, has started a GoFundMe page to help Valeria and her family.

Paul’s girlfriend Olga Kavryshvili grew up in Dnipro next to Valeria and they have been friends for more than 20 years.

Olga was also forced to flee the country when war broke out, she is now based in the UK and lives in Brighton with Paul.

Paul said: “Valeria has made the heartbreaking decision to return to Dnipro in eastern Ukraine as she sees no other option.

“It’s too dangerous and potentially life-threatening due to the ongoing missile bombardment.”

Paul told The Argus that when Olga told him the family was returning to the war zone, he felt he had to do something to help.

He said: “Olga explained that Valeria had no money and I couldn’t stand the thought of them going back to a war zone, especially with such young children.

“I’m raising money on GoFundMe to provide them with enough housing so they don’t have to return home until it’s safe for them.”

On the donation page, he wrote: “Please help with everything you can so that Leria and her young children can stay in Poland.

“Please help with anything you can. Many Thanks.”

The Home Office has been asked for comment.
