Fundraising for Brighton trans women for gender reassignment surgery

Billy Carr, from Brighton, switched from boys to girls physical education at school and came out as transgender two years ago and started hormone replacement therapy.

The 19-year-old says she “always knew” there was something different about her.

Billy said: “I’ve known I’m trans for as long as I can really remember, I’ve known I’m different, I’ve always felt different.

“I’m so lucky to have such a supportive group around me.”

The Argos:

Billy studies songwriting in London, also releases and performs her own music in Brighton and sings about her experiences as a trans woman.

She added: “I love living in Brighton, it’s a much more welcoming place for someone who is trans.

“I perform in a lot of gay bars, so I’ve met a lot of people here.”

The 19-year-old has now opted for gender reassignment surgery.

The Argos:

She said: “I’ve always felt more feminine. In secondary school, I let teachers switch me to girls’ sports, I always felt that feminine side.

“It’s like the final piece of the puzzle to get to where I want to be and where I’ve always envisioned myself.”

After researching MTF Bottom Surgery to create female genitalia, Billy found it could take up to ten years at the NHS.

She feels the effects of not having surgery for such a long period of time could be “adverse” to her mental health.

The Argos:

That’s why she’s started a Go Fund Me page to raise the money she needs for a private surgery, totaling £21,000.

Billy said: “Even before I came out I had looked at everything, I knew it was going to be a long, long process.

“That way I could have the surgery done between six and eight months, which is a much better time frame.”

Speaking on the page, she said: “I know £21,000 is an extortionate sum of money that will take a long time to accumulate but would cover the full cost of the surgery and follow-up care.

The Argos:

“I will also save and contribute whenever I can.

“I am so grateful for any donation whatsoever as I know how hard it is to make a living these days.”
