Terrified thrill-seekers were dangling 40 meters in the air when the ride they were on broke down as the carnival came to town for the first time in three years.
An unlucky fairgoer says she was stranded on the 40-metre-tall Speed Buzz ride for about 15 minutes on the first day of the fair while staff desperately tried to fix the problem.
Excited punters had burst through the gates of Newcastle’s amusement park as it reopened for the first time today (June 17) after a three-year hiatus due to the pandemic, reports say ChronicleLive.
But within three hours of opening, people on the popular ride were stranded over 130 feet off the ground as ride operators worked to fix a technical problem.

The ride, which seats eight people, spins at high speed. It features a four-person car at each end of the ride that rotates when Speed Buzz rotates. It currently resides in The Hoppings on Newcastle’s Town Moor.
According to Crow Events, who manage Speed Buzz, the ride is 40m high.
One person who was on the ride with her boyfriend at the time said: “We went upstairs but then we were stuck there for about 15 minutes. We didn’t know what was going on, but then someone said the bracket broke.”
“[My friend] was already afraid to go on, but I persuaded him to go on. He was white as a sheet, he was scared.”

A woman who was on the ride before technical difficulties arose added: “I told him before he went on the ride that the brackets were going to break. I was just kidding, I didn’t expect it to actually happen.”
Those on the ride said they were left tipped in their seats as staff worked to fix the problem.
Once everyone was safely removed from the ride, operators began test runs, with no one allowed on the ride until staff felt confident it was safe.

Everyone, including those waiting for the ride, received a full refund for the £5 ride.
A person waiting said: “We waited in line to get in but we got a refund because they said it was broken.
Another claimed they saw a crying girl on the drive.
Speed Buzz’s operators, Crow Events, have been contacted for comment.
