Gabby Petito’s mother has warned that internet scammers are impersonating a foundation set up in her daughter’s name to try to steal donations.
ichole Schmidt said those wishing to donate to the Gabby Petito Foundation, set up after her death to help victims of domestic violence, should only visit the official website.
Ms Schmidt wrote on the foundation’s Facebook page: “There are so many people trying to make money from this, it’s horrible.
“They’re claiming to be donating to our foundation, know that’s not us.”
Petito’s parents, Ms. Schmidt and Joseph Petito, along with their partners Jim Schmidt and Tara Petito, established the foundation after her death to help domestic violence victims access resources and share their stories, and reunite the missing with their families.
Joseph Petito attended the opening of the SafeSpace domestic violence shelter in Vero Beach, Florida, over the weekend, and told WPBF that supporting those efforts helped preserve her memory.
“I think Gabby would live through people to be honest with you,” he said.
“A lot of people are affected by this and a lot of her stories have come this far because people feel it, they understand it. They have seen their own child.”
The foundation has also donated to a new shelter in Indian River County, Florida, and set up scholarships at two of Ms. Petito’s former high schools in Long Island, New York.
Petito’s body was found in Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming on September 19.
The FBI concluded that her boyfriend Brian Laundrie murdered her by strangulation.
Laundrie’s skeleton was found in Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park, near his parents’ home in North Port Florida, on October 20.
