A group of street cleaners from Galway City Council are Ireland’s latest millionaires after winning the €5,541,001 lottery jackpot.
The 10-strong syndicate, formed almost 25 years ago, collected their winnings at Lotto Headquarters in Dublin this afternoon.
Each member of the syndicate chooses their own numbers.
The winning ticket was sold at Newspoint, Unit 25, Galway Shopping Centre, Headford Road on Sunday 31 July.
A syndicate member said the group always believed they could win in a year.
“The boys considered changing the numbers at some point, but then decided against it,” they said.
“Just last Christmas a member mentioned he was leaving the syndicate but he was persuaded to continue and was told it was just the price of a pint and a newspaper.
“Luckily, when the syndicate winning numbers came out in the August 3 lottery draw, he stayed.”
Another syndicate member added: “Someone said we ‘cleaned up’ and we did, but we boys clean up every day by making sure the streets and parks of Galway city are spotless.
“We are proud of our city. Unlike the “Great Seven,” these “Great 10” can now all ride off into the sunset with a guaranteed lottery win.”
Meanwhile a winner from Co Kildare has claimed the top prize of €500,000 in the EuroMillions Plus draw he won on Tuesday 9th August.
The winner, who wishes to remain private, said he hopes to buy his first home.
“It was my mum’s birthday so I bought her a EuroMillions Plus ticket and then I thought I’d buy one while I’m at it,” they said.
“I checked the numbers and couldn’t believe it. In the end it was my ticket that won. My mom said it made her birthday even better knowing I won. I’m hoping to buy my first home so this couldn’t have come at a better time.”
The winning Quick Pick ticket was on sale at the News 4 U store in Glenroyal Shopping Centre, Maynooth, Co Kildare on 6th August.
