Game Of Thrones prequel will return for second series after ‘hit ratings’

House Of The Dragon starring Matt Smith, Emma D’Arcy and Paddy Considine will return for a second season, Sky said.

His fantasy story is based on author George RR Martin’s Fire And Blood, set 200 years before the events of Game Of Thrones.

The HBO television series chronicles the beginning of the end of House Targaryen and the events leading up to the Targaryen Civil War, known as the Dance of the Dragons.

Following the successful launch of the prequel, the return of the series was confirmed for a second season on Friday.

Zai Bennett, Sky’s chief content officer, said: “House of the Dragon has proven to be a ratings hit, and we anticipate it will go from strength to strength due to the way it is told. Fascinating story and amazing production value.

“We look forward to sharing the second series with our customers on Sky and Now.”

Ex-Time Lord and The Crown star Smith plays Prince Daemon Targaryen, King Viserys’ younger brother and heir to the throne.

The hit series also stars D’Arcy as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, the king’s firstborn child, pure Valyrian and a dragon rider, and Considine as King Viserys Targaryen.

Eve Best plays Princess Rhaenys Velaryon in the new series, while Olivia Cooke plays Alicent Hightower and Rhys Ifans as the on-screen father and hand of the king, Otto Hightower.

Line Of Duty, Doctor Who and Death In Paradise’s Steve Toussaint stars as Lord Corlys Velaryon, a renowned maritime explorer who has built his home into a place of power and wealth.
