Games of 2022: The best update of 2022 came in Sea of Thieves

We turned the hourglass of fate and raised the banner for the minions of flame in the battle for the sea of thieves. With the final vote, our galleon dived under water. We braced ourselves for the upcoming battle as we navigated the coral reefs, a Megadon silhouetted in the distance. Suddenly we began our ascent and tumbled over the waves with another galleon right in front of us. We dropped sail, charging at our opponents as they turned, and aiming their guns at a broadside on our bow. The fight was upon us.

When Rare released Sea of Thieves in 2018, the general consensus was that it was a ton of fun to play, but lacked specific pirate objectives. A few years and dozens of updates later, those pirates who saw the true potential of Sea of Thieves were rewarded many times over. Most recently, Sea of Thieves Season 8 has arrived. It’s a PVP focused game changer and the best video game update of 2022.

Our attempt to traverse the front of their ship failed as they raised the sails and used the tighter turning radius to focus on their guns. Our ship was badly damaged and we could barely return fire with the number of repairs needed to keep us afloat. Worse, our supplies were running low. If things didn’t change quickly, we’d be dead in the water.

Sea of Thieves’ optional PVP element creates an ever-present danger that every voyage can end with another crew swooping in and stealing your loot while sending your ship into a wet grave. This excitement feeds the sense of victory after a successful voyage, and the bombastic battles on board are among the most thrilling experiences in gaming.

Choosing PVP wasn’t always easy. Sometimes there are no ships on the horizon or a crew you find, choose to flee or sink rather than engage in battle. The previous attempt at on-demand PVP was Arena, but participation was patchy and the focus on points diverted focus from the thrill of pure combat. When the arena finally closed, pirates roamed the seas in search of a pure PVP experience, relying on luck to find ships willing to trade cannonballs and cutlasses.

Season 8 used it to buy the Hourglass of Destiny. With one move, you can join one of two factions in the game and show the world you’re ready to cross swords. Members of rival factions can see each other on the map, giving buccaneers with itchy trigger fingers a clear target for battle. Even better, you can opt for matchmaking. Once a match is found, your ship dives under the sea and emerges in line with your opponent’s bow in a limited area on the sea.

The impact of the update was immediately apparent to anyone playing Sea of Thieves. Battle-addicted pirates quickly find willing opponents. Sailors who prefer a more peaceful experience will find seas with a much lower saturation of wannabe bullies. Progressing through factions unlocks new areas, cosmetics, and customizations. It changed an already great game for the better and breathed new life into Sea of Thieves.

We split our crew, a risky maneuver but one we had to take. I fired myself from a cannon and grabbed the ladder on the side of her ship. In the chaos, they didn’t hear the telltale splash of me hanging from their boat. Our helmsman meanwhile steered toward a group of floating barrels hoping to harpoon supplies aboard, but we quickly took on water. As the enemies pursued him, it seemed all hope was lost. Suddenly the ship fell into the air in a blinding flash of light and fire.

Unknown to both crews, the keg pile concealed a powder keg, which exploded when the ship collided with it. Taking advantage of the confusion, I killed two of the four pirates with my cutlass before they realized what was happening. Water and fire filled the ship as I blocked and dodged the remaining crew members’ resistance. They were about to perish, and perhaps the day is yet ours. Just as the rushing water had filled the ship’s middle deck, however, there was a faint horn-like sound, announcing that our own ship had succumbed to its wounds and sunk in the sea. The day was lost and the screen went black…

Some time later, we woke up on a deserted island, boarded our newly spawned ship, and spun the hourglass of destiny again.
