Gang steals $500,000 in cash-in-transit raid

Thieves are said to have stolen around 400,000 euros during a money transport raid in southern Dublin over the weekend.

The security van was attacked outside a shopping center in Templeogue just after 6pm on Saturday.

Two men approached the security guard on Orwell Road and threatened him before using an angle grinder to remove a safe from the van.

The attackers then got into a silver Ford Focus sedan and fled the scene. The getaway car was later found burnt out in the Coolock area.

Gardaí said none of the security guards were injured during the incident

Sources described the armed robbery as “highly organized” and “well planned.”

Gardaí in Terenure are investigating the incident and are asking for witnesses to come forward.

A Garda spokesman said: “The car, described as a silver Ford Focus, was later discovered burned out in Dunree Park, Coolock, Dublin 5.

“A Garda Síochána in Terenure is asking witnesses to come forward.

“They are particularly appealing to drivers with dash cams and those who provide video footage of the Orwell Shopping Centre/Orwell Road area at the time of the incident or with footage of the car exiting the area.”

It was the second armed robbery in south Dublin on Saturday, after a pharmacy was attacked in an unrelated robbery that afternoon.

Shortly after 2pm, gardaí were alerted after two men with screwdrivers entered a pharmacy in the Donnybrook area and threatened staff. They fled the scene on foot after stealing a sum of cash, a phone and medicines from the store.

A spokesman said: “In a follow-up operation, detectives from the Donnybrook/Irishtown district conducted a search and arrest operation in the Clonskeagh area and arrested two men in their 40s. Medicines were also seized.

“Both are currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at Irishtown Garda railway station.”
