Garbage can fire behind Co-op store in Goring was ‘premeditated’

A FIRE behind a co-op that spread to the apartments above is believed to have been intentionally started.

The fire started in a dustbin near the truck bed behind the store in Field Place Parade, Goring.

A window frame was partially melted by the flames.

The fire happened on Sunday afternoon.

The West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were called at 1.40pm on Sunday to reports of a fire involving a rubbish bin on Field Place Parade.

“Joint Fire Control mobilized a fire engine from Worthing Fire Station to the scene.

“They found a fire involving a household dustbin that spread to a nearby building.

“They quickly extinguished the fire with a high-pressure hose reel.

“The fire is believed to have been set deliberately and the investigation is ongoing.”

A Sussex Police spokeswoman said officers were alerted to the fire around 2.30pm.

She said: “The fire was extinguished and officers attended to conduct further investigations.
