Garda (40) is on trial for harassing two colleagues

A 40-year-old Lake Garda has appeared before a Galway court for molesting two female colleagues in custody.

Ichael Mannion, from Tooreena, Renvyle, Connemara, is accused of molesting the first female Garda on dates between 13 August and 13 September 2019 in violation of section 10(1) and (6) of the Non-Fatal Offenses Act the person in 1997.

He is also accused of molesting the second female Garda on dates between August 8 and November 23, 2019, in violation of the same section of the 1997 Act.

Inspector Kieran Hanley testified at Galway District Court’s Bank Holiday sessions this week that he had arrested the accused by appointment at Garda Headquarters in Renmore, Galway, to charge him this morning. He said Mannion – who appeared in court in civilian clothes – did not respond after being cautioned when both charges were presented to him.

Insp. Hanley said the state’s request was to remand the defendant on bail with conditions to appear in Clifden District Court next month.

The court heard that the chief prosecutor had ordered the charges to be dealt with at the district court level.

Judge Gerard Furlong has remanded Mannion on bail without bail of €500 to appear in Clifden District Court on September 22.

The bail was granted on condition that the accused appear at all of his court appearances; behave well and not insult again; provide the Gardaí Public Prosecutor’s Office with a mobile phone number and answer it at any time; and no contact with any witnesses to the matter, particularly the two applicants named in the indictment.

The judge also ordered all charges to be sent to Mannion’s solicitors in Sligo ahead of his appearance in court in Clifden next month. Garda (40) is on trial for harassing two colleagues
