A Garda has suffered serious injuries in a traffic accident in Cork.

he Garda – who was on transport duty – was attending an incident on the N25 Waterford-Cork road outside Youghal near the city bypass when he appeared to be injured by a passing vehicle.

The incident happened just after 7 p.m.

Emergency services rushed to the scene, including Gardaí, Youghal Fire Brigade and HSE paramedics.

The Garda is understood to have sustained serious crush injuries to one leg, as well as several other injuries.

Paramedics worked at the scene to save the officer’s leg amid fears it would have to be amputated.

The injured officer was taken to Cork University Hospital (CUH) where he was due to undergo emergency surgery.

Gardaí cordoned off the affected area of ​​the road to allow for a full investigation by investigators at the scene of the accident.

No one was injured in the incident, although the other two motorists at the scene were treated for shock.

Early indications are that the Garda were helping an elderly motorist whose vehicle broke down on the N25 between Youghal and Killeagh when he was somehow struck by a passing vehicle.

The driving conditions at that time were difficult given the darkness, the foggy rain and the large amounts of surface water.

The injured officer is stationed in Cork.

In a statement released tonight, a Garda spokesman said: “Just before 7pm tonight an unmarked Garda patrol car assisted a broken down vehicle on the N25 at the Youghal bypass.

“The unmarked patrol car was hit by another vehicle. A Garda member has suffered serious injuries and was taken from the scene to Cork University Hospital, where he is in critical condition.

“The driver of the other vehicle was also taken to Cork University Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
