Gardaí are investigating whether fatal hammer attack on Drogheda man linked to argument over €30,000 in cash

A man who died on Christmas Eve after being attacked by up to four men armed with hammers may have been targeted over a financial row.

rian Reynolds, in his 40s, was found seriously injured at his home in Drogheda last Thursday night.

He was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in the city but was pronounced dead on Saturday.

Detectives investigating his death believe he was the victim of a major hammer attack before he was found and the investigation is expected to expand into a murder probe.

The attack is being treated as targeted, with Gardaí investigating whether he was attacked over a €30,000 cash dispute.

A source said Irish Independent: “Information currently verified indicates that the victim was assaulted with associates of a local criminal gang for significant sums of money.

“As much as 30,000 euros could have been the focus, but it needs to be clarified whether this was a motive for this violent killing.”

Images were also shared on social media naming a number of people allegedly responsible for his death.

However, no arrests have been made as part of the investigation.

Mr. Reynolds also ran a local business in the area.

Up to four men are believed to have stormed his home on Thursday before subjecting him to a violent attack.

Gardaí are investigating whether he was assaulted by associates of the so-called anti-Maguire drug gang.

The faction is led by two brothers who are currently on the run from Gardaí, facing serious charges in that jurisdiction.

They were involved in a violent feud with associates of crime boss Owen Maguire in Drogheda for several years, which resulted in four murders.

Mr Reynolds’ death is not believed to be related to this feud.

Gardaí provided details of the death on Christmas Day and said all circumstances are being investigated.

They also said an autopsy has been completed, details of which will not be released for “operational reasons”.

A Gardaí spokesman said: “Gardaí is investigating all the circumstances of the death of a man who died on Thursday 22 April 2007.

“The man, in his 40s, was discovered with serious injuries at around 7.30pm on Thursday 22nd December 2022 at a residential building in Rathmullan Park, Drogheda, Co Louth.

“He was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Drogheda Hospital, where he died on the evening of December 24, 2022.

“A full technical investigation of the Rathmullan Park crime scene was conducted by the Divisional Scenes of Crime Unit.”

Gardaí is appealing to anyone with information that may assist in this investigation to come forward.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact Garda station Drogheda on 041 9874200, Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station,” the spokesman added.
