Gardaí are warning brides and grooms to keep cards safe after numerous thefts at wedding receptions

Gardaí are warning newlyweds to beware of stolen wedding cards after a spate of thefts at receptions have been reported recently.

ork Garda Sergeant John Kelly said there had been numerous reports of wedding cards containing cash being stolen from hotels.

Sergeant Kelly, from Fermoy, said the “first thing” wedding guests want to do is “get rid of the card as soon as possible” so they can enjoy themselves.

He said newlyweds should have a member of the bridal party collect the cards and then place them in a hotel safe.

He said when cards get stolen these days it’s even worse as many young couples rely on the cash to pay for the wedding.

Sergeant Kelly brought up the subject with “an incident in mind”.

“[There is] The possibility of a repeat, I heard about that years ago. Weddings, we’re back now after Covid with big weddings and I suppose more and more people are going to weddings with an envelope with maybe 200 euros in it,” he said.

“The bride and groom must have a plan of who will actually take care of the money on this lucky day. You don’t want to turn a happy day into an unhappy day.”

In conversation with Patricia Messinger about the C103 Cork Today ShowSergeant Kelly said it “happened recently” where a number of wedding cards were “stolen in an incident”.

“It’s one of those horror stories and nowadays the bride and groom rely on that money to pay for the wedding,” he added.
