Gardaí investigate fatal hit-and-run in Co Cavan

Gardaí in Bailieboro are investigating a fatal hit-and-run accident involving a male pedestrian (50 years old) in Co Cavan.

Investigators believe the incident happened sometime between 10 p.m. last night and noon today.

Just after 12pm this afternoon the body of the man was discovered by a motorist along the N3 near Billis Bridge in the townland of Ballyjamesduff.

“The incident is believed to have occurred sometime between 10pm last night, Thursday 18 August 2022 and 12pm today, Friday 19 August,” a Garda spokesman said.

“Gardaí and emergency services were at the scene and the man was pronounced dead. His body was taken to the morgue at Cavan General Hospital. The state pathologist’s office has been notified.

“Following an investigation of the area, it was determined that the man was hit by a vehicle that did not remain at the scene.”

Forensic Collision Investigators have completed a full technical examination of the scene and the road has been reopened.

Gardaí in Bailieboro are calling on everyone with information about the incident to come forward and anyone with knowledge of a vehicle with unexplained damage in the greater Cavan area.

Gardaí are also appealing to all road users who were on the N3 at Ballyjamesduff between 10pm last night Thursday 18th August and midday today and who saw any unusual activity in the area to get in touch.

Any drivers who have camera footage, including dashcam footage, and who were in the area between these hours are asked to provide such footage to Gardaí.
