Gardai investigate possible link between arson and petrol bomb attack

Gardai are investigating a possible link between a petrol bomb attack on a house and a farmer’s shed set ablaze within days in Kilmallock.

Ardai are apparently very concerned about the escalation of serious criminal behavior in the area, as reported by the Limerick guide.

A dispute between individuals is suspected to be the main cause of the incidents.

Several petrol bombs were thrown at a house in Kilmallock on Wednesday evening January 18th.

Gardai confirmed they are investigating a case of property damage.

“Investigations are ongoing,” said a Garda spokesman. The area around the property was cordoned off to allow Gardai to conduct a forensic investigation.

‘I’ve never heard of anything like this in Kilmallock before. It’s scary,” said Cllr Carey, who asked anyone with information about the incident to contact Gardai.

Then at around 8.30pm on Saturday night a farm shed in Kilmallock was set ablaze in an arson attack.

One line of inquiry Gardai are pursuing is that those suspected of being behind Wednesday night’s petrol bombing are also behind the firehouse fire.

A Garda spokesman confirmed Monday to the Limerick Leader that they were investigating an alleged criminal incident involving a fire at a building in Kilmallock on Saturday night.

“No injuries were reported. There are currently no arrests. The investigation is ongoing,” said a Garda spokesman.

It goes without saying that firefighters contact gardai if they suspect the cause of the fire and that a technical investigation is carried out by specialist officers.

Six units from Kilmallock, Charleville and Cappamore rushed to the scene of the fire on the outskirts of Kilmallock.

They fought the fire that engulfed a farmer’s shed all night and into the morning.

There were no animals in the barn at the time the fire broke out.

Gardai has appealed to anyone who saw suspicious activity in the Kilmallock area on Wednesday and Saturday night to contact Bruff Garda Station on 061 382940.

A local told the Limerick Leader: ‘It’s very scary to think that people would plan and carry out things like this. It’s crazy. Someone gets hurt if they don’t help themselves. It’s extremely inconsiderate.”
