Gardaí issues arrest warrant for doctor who allegedly fled to Asia with boy

A European Arrest Warrant (EAH) was issued against a doctor who is said to have fled to an Asian country with a boy.

The child’s mother was “disturbed” by the turn of events, a source said.

Gardaí in the southeast have been investigating the case since last September. They compiled a detailed file which they submitted to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

The DPP recently ordered the suspect to be charged with child abduction.

The middle-aged suspect was also the subject of a separate investigation by Gardaí at the Divisional Protective Services Unit at Dundrum Garda Station.

In this case there is sufficient evidence to charge him with the criminal offense of coercion in connection with crimes against a woman he knows well.

A separate EAW has been issued in relation to these offences, which are said to have been committed in south Dublin before the man moved to the south east of the country.

These offenses are believed to relate to “extortion activities”.

There is no extradition deal between the European Union and the Asian country where the suspect lives with the boy, but sources say high-level negotiations could be held with a view to deporting the medic to Ireland.

The arrest warrant issued for the suspect also applies to him if he enters the UK, as he may be arrested there under the post-Brexit EU-UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement.

Sources said there were no concerns the boy, who was allegedly kidnapped, had suffered damage since he was flown out of the country.

The suspect and the boy are related.

The boy, who lived in the southeast, cannot be identified for legal reasons, but is less than six years old.

Gardaí had previously tracked the suspect’s movements from Dublin Airport to the country where he now resides and is from.

“Essentially, that person can be arrested if they set foot in an EU country or the UK,” a source said.

“There is no evidence yet that he will be deported from his own country, but this is being investigated.

“This is a very sensitive case. The boy’s mother lives in this country and is obviously dismayed by what has happened,” the source added. Gardaí issues arrest warrant for doctor who allegedly fled to Asia with boy
