Gardeners question time to mark the 75th anniversary of the exhibition at the Chelsea Flower Show

BBC Radio 4 Gardeners’ Question Time (GQT) will celebrate its 75th anniversary next month with its first garden display at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show.

Designed by GQT panelist and RHS Chelsea Medalist Matthew Wilson, it will be a “playful and relaxing space” with plants that are frequently asked about in the programme.

The exhibition will also have an on-site recording studio housed in a retro camper van where visitors can ask a question to a GQT radio panellist.

GQT presenters will be present for sessions throughout the week of the show, and attendees will be able to see their question on the air at a later time.

The exhibit also includes GQT artifacts, some personal presenter rarities and well-known historical gardening tools, tracing the evolution of gardening and the Radio 4 show over more than seven decades.

Wilson said: “I’m thrilled to be designing the first-ever Gardeners Question Time garden display for this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show.

“Gardening has helped so many of us through these trying times, and I look forward to personally sharing the wealth of wisdom from the GQT team with our many listeners this spring.”

The Chelsea Flower Show, organized by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), takes place in the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea in London from 24th to 28th May.

Gemma Lake, Show Manager at RHS Chelsea Flower Show said: “We are thrilled to have such an acclaimed and respected gardening program at RHS Chelsea, returning to its usual Spring dates.

“It’s particularly fitting for this milestone anniversary and what better way to celebrate than to be among our thousands of visitors who are so passionate about horticulture.

“Matthew’s design not only reflects the past 75 years of gardening, gardens and GQT, but also features wildlife friendly planting which is a key theme throughout the show this year.”

To mark GQT’s 75th anniversary, presenter Kathy Clugston will host a special episode on Friday celebrating the years of “expert garden advice” and the “odd patch of horticultural stupidity”.

The show shows new material and archive clips from 1947 to the present day.

Other well-known GQT panelists including Pippa Greenwood, James Wong and Ashley Edwards will also appear during the landmark episode, which will look back at how things have unfolded over 75 years.

The show first aired on April 9, 1947, entitled How Does Your Garden Grow – A Gardener’s Question Time and featured a panel of three gardening experts answering questions from amateur gardeners.
