A new remote-first game studio that aims to build a company built on the health of its employees and the world. This philosophy has attracted talent from all over the industry, including veterans who have worked on games like Marvel’s Spider-ManRemains of Edith Finch, Journey, Fallout 4 and more.
The studio is called Garden and co-founded by Chris Bell (Journey, What Remains of Edith Finch), Lexie Dostal (Dustforce) and Stephen Bell (Blaseball, What’s Left of Edith Finch.). Gardens has plans for its first game, set to be an online game where players will interact with each other in a mysterious and magical world. It will build on online games the team has built in the past including Journey, Ashen and Blaseball.

This remote studio, with staff primarily based in Portland, OR, and Los Angeles, CA, is named for the type of game the team was looking to create “artistically crafted, living environments” for mainly focused on the online multiplayer experience.
“With Gardens, we wanted to create a studio that cares as much about the health, happiness and well-being of our team members as we do the games we create together,” says Bell.
Gardens has attracted veterans with experience working on multiple games. Along with the founders, the studio also has a team that includes Leighton Milne (Asen, The Hobbit), Ryan Benno (Spider-Man, Ratchet & Clank), ma-ko, Sarah Sands (Fullbright), Rose Dale (Skyrim, Fallout 3, Fallout 4), Roldan Melcon (Where the Cards Fall), and Tonia Beglari (Monster Hunter World: Iceborne).
“I decided to join Gardens after my first meeting with the founders,” said Sands, who previously left the game industry before speaking to the founders of Gardens. “I am grateful every day that I can help build a studio that is as much focused on creating an inclusive environment where people feel valued and respected as creating innovative games. wonderful.”
After receiving a round of funding, Gardens is also looking to hire and build a team as it begins work on its first online game.
