Garth Brooks delivers the X-Factor at long-awaited Dublin concerts

Eight long years since the sham that saw Dublin City Council decide to license three of Dublin’s five sold-out concerts – resulting in none of the shows going ahead – Garth Brooks finally played at Croke Park over the weekend. The wait was worth it.

During shows, Brooks was often overcome with emotion as he stood and watched the huge audience’s reaction to his music.

“Love you Ireland,” he once said tearfully, before adding, “I can’t believe we actually made it.”

This sentiment was shared by the show’s promoter, Peter Aiken.

“It’s been a roller coaster ride of eight years,” he said Sunday independent. “I never thought that when it was last stopped we would ever get back to it. But we did. And here we are, we got it across the line with a lot of work and we got there, finally.

“It feels great to host these shows. It felt like that day would never come, but it’s here now and it’s incredible.

“These gigs are a big deal for all of us. Next year, Aiken Promotions will be promoting Gigs 60 Years. This is the biggest thing we’ve ever done and it’s unlikely we’ll ever do anything that big again. This is the biggest thing that has ever happened in Ireland. That would be hard to top.”

He added, “It would be great if my dad was here to see it,” referring to the legendary Jim Aiken, who died of cancer in February 2007.

“I can feel his spirit. He is everywhere. The lasting impression he made on so many people can be seen in the way they talk about him. I’m proud to host these shows for him and for the whole family.”

He had aunts, as well as his four sisters Claire, Susan, Cathy and Joan, and all their children – “15 nephews and nieces” – coming to Friday’s opening show.

According to her uncle Peter, “Garth is a brilliant performer. He has the same as Jagger and Springsteen.

“Garth has that X-factor about him. He is unbelievable.”
