“So it’s only fair that I give you the bad news: I’m afraid I still have 3 years left to work on my contract, so you’re stuck with me for a while.”

A source told the Daily Mail the £40m fee would not be able to entice him to stay as he wants to spend more time with his family and return to the UK.

“He could have gone down the cash route with Gavin and Stacey, holding the check and writing it forever, but he chose not to. This is the same thing,” they said.

An insider told the publication: “James wants to write, make films and he loves theatre.

“He’s only in his forties. There’s so much more out there.”

While James himself has told fans his final episode will air in 2023 as he hinted at some of the thinking behind the big career move.

“There are still some other things that I feel like I want to do,” he told Deadline.

“I want to try and write. There are some [stories] I want to tell. I want to see if I can afford it. The fact that it’s scary is the reason to do it. “

And he told his studio audience last week that he had decided to give up, explaining: “I have some news of my own that I want to share with you guys. Seven and a half years ago, I started this program, and in no way, it changed my life.
