Gary Neville has called LaLiga ‘corrupt’ and urged Spanish football bosses ‘to make one’ after their exceptional response to Kylian Mbappe’s decision to remain at Paris Saint-Germain.
The French sensation has signed a new and landmark three-year deal with the club, having previously joined La Liga giants Real Madrid when his old deal expired in June. Mbappe’s about-face just before scoring a perfectly timed hat-trick in PSG’s 5-0 win over Metz at the Parc des Princes has enraged Spain’s bigwigs. In a lengthy statement, LaLiga described the situation as “scandalous” and confirmed that a complaint would be lodged with UEFA, among others.
However, Neville took aim at her, tweeting: “LaLiga can do one! As corrupt as the rest.” The former Manchester United captain, who attended a Legends charity match on Saturday, spent four months in Spain six years ago as manager of Valencia.
Mbappe’s hotly debated decision has grabbed headlines around the world, with those in Madrid being the most outraged. Real were big favorites to sign the 23-year-old and even offered PSG around £170m for his services last summer, an offer controversially firmly rejected as Mbappe may have left his hometown club for free 12 months later .
But the French superstar has finally confirmed he will remain in Paris, much to LaLiga’s annoyance. “In light of Kylian Mbappe’s possible announcement to stay at Paris Saint-Germain, LaLiga would like to explain that this type of agreement threatens the economic sustainability of European football and not only jeopardizes hundreds of thousands of jobs and the sporting integrity from European competitions in the medium term, but also from our domestic leagues”, it says in their statement.
“It’s scandalous that a club like PSG, which lost more than €220m last season after racking up losses of €700m in recent seasons, can be faced with an agreement with these characteristics while those Clubs that could accept the arrival of the player without seeing his payroll compromise remain without being able to sign him.

“LaLiga will file a complaint against PSG with UEFA, the French administrative and tax authorities and the competent bodies of the European Union, continue to defend the economic ecosystem of European football and its sustainability.”
However, the Parisians were delighted with the result, as PSG President Nasser Al-Khelaifi stated: “Kylian’s commitment to PSG is an amazing milestone in the history of our club and a wonderful moment for our fans around the world. Since the day Kylian joined our family, he’s reached greatness beyond his years at every step.
“Through his involvement with PSG he will be the basis for the future of our club on and off the pitch. I am incredibly proud and very happy – for Kylian, for our fans and for our entire PSG family worldwide – that we will continue our wonderful journey together. For our fans and our club, the biggest chapters of our future lie ahead.”
