Gary Neville has offered his reaction to England’s World Cup group stage draw and discovered a “complication” on Gareth Southgate’s side.
The three lions were handed what appeared to be a plum set of devices in Group B, where they were drawn against Iran, the United States and the winner of a recent play-off game – meaning either Scotland, Wales or Ukraine will join Southgate’s men in the group stage. Former England striker Alan Shearer thinks Gareth Southgate will be more than happy with the result of the draw on Friday.
England travel to Qatar fresh after coming painfully close to lifting the title at Euro 2020, where they were defeated by Italy on penalties at Wembley. And Southgate’s men will be looking to build on their recent successes at the World Cup, where they were knocked out by Croatia in the semi-finals in 2018.
England will begin their campaign with a clash against Iran on 21 November before taking on the USA in a replay of their group stage match at the 2010 World Cup on 25 November. The last place in the group, occupied by Scotland, Wales or Ukraine, will be decided in the summer.
Former Three Lions right-back Neville added that the possibility of playing either Wales or Scotland puts extra pressure on the Southgate side and he believes it wasn’t a good pot four draw for the group .
Neville explained to Sky Sports: “We’ve seen these games in recent tournaments against both Scotland and Wales – each of those games has been very difficult at each Euro. Scotland were a big challenge over the summer and Wales went further than us in 2016.
“We know how much it means to the Scots, Welsh or Irish to play England and that doesn’t mean we’re arrogant, but it’s a huge game – it’s for England too but it doesn’t seem to carry that same dislike.
“I’m looking forward to the group but it’s all difficult games from an emotional point of view, more than from a football point of view and that brings with it some potential problems from England. You would have wanted to avoid playing against a home game because it’s a complication you don’t need.
“It was always the same – we had it at Euro 1996 when Scotland should have beaten us in front of Gazza’s fantastic goal. The emotions and passion that these nations and their fans bring will make it difficult as they travel particularly well and it will be brilliant games for us, or even if it’s Ukraine.”
