Gatwick slammed after a man charged £20 for airport pickup

A disgruntled driver has explained how frustrated he is after being charged four times for picking up friends at Gatwick airport.

Neil Evans has complained that he had to pay £20 for his trip on Tuesday 13 September despite only being there for five minutes in total.

Mr Evans, 52, also says that after he approached car park company NCP to resolve the issue, he felt he was quickly sacked after being given no alternatives. A spokeswoman for the airport said other pickup options are available.

Mr Evans said: “My friends didn’t know the layout of the pickup area so I circled around four times.

“I didn’t want to stop traffic, so I thought I was doing the right thing, but when I got home they said, ‘There’s nothing we can do about it’.”

A fee has been introduced at Gatwick Airport for those wishing to drop off and pick up passengers in 2021. Drivers must now pay £5 for the first ten minutes of their stay, with an additional charge for each additional minute, up to a maximum of £25.

Mr Evans, from Burgess Hill, said he had hoped NCP would understand the mishap but when he called to discuss the problem he was told there was nothing they could do.

He added that he’s since paid half the fee, but that he’s waiting to hear more from the company in hopes it can be resolved.

A spokeswoman for Gatwick Airport said: “The charge plays a role in encouraging people to choose more sustainable options, such as our excellent public transport links. Unfortunately, in this case the customer has to pay a fee of £20.

“To avoid this scenario, we would always recommend pick-ups to use our short-term car parks. Alternatively, passengers can park for up to two hours in our long-stay car parks free of charge and use the free shuttle bus to the terminals.”
