GCSE results in pictures as Sussex students celebrate

STUDENTS across Sussex congratulated each other and celebrated as they collected their GCSE results from schools and colleges across the county.

Pupils braved the morning downpour to get their results, but the wet weather didn’t dampen spirits, and young people jumped for joy when they learned what grades they had achieved in the first exams since the pandemic began.

Parents and children alike were emotional as they collected their grades, and students took time to take selfies with friends and congratulate each other.

Some schools bucked the national trend and reported their best results ever, with many students achieving grades of 7 and above, equivalent to an A or A*.

Regional differences in the proportion of GCSE top grades have become more apparent in England since Covid.

Just under a third of GCSE grades were 7 and above in London, compared with just over a fifth in the North East and Yorkshire and Humber.

The gap between the regions with the highest and lowest shares of top marks is 0.9 percentage points larger than in 2019.

Some Level 2 BTec students who should be getting results are facing delays.

Across England, Wales and Northern Ireland, students have achieved results for GCSE, BTec and other professional and technical awards.

Overall, 73.2 percent of GCSEs this year were graded 4 and above, compared to 77.1 percent in 2021, when grades were based on teacher ratings.

It is still significantly higher than 2019, the last annual exams were taken before Covid when it was 67.3 percent.

The proportion of top grades – 7/A and higher – is 26.3 percent. This is also higher than 2019 (20.8 percent) and lower than 2021 (28.9 percent).
