Gears 5 developer focused on future projects

Turn off the chainsaws and get ready to abandon the planet to the wrath of the maggots – the gears 5 The developer is on the verge of abandoning their latest game and moving on to something else entirely.

Microsoft Games Studios developers The Coalition has announced that it’s removing the map builder feature from 2019’s hit action shooter Gears 5 so the studio staff can “focus on future projects.”

In case you weren’t sure, the Map Builder mode was designed to allow players to create custom levels for the Escape mode that came with the game (which had its own achievements and everything).

But what could the team be working on? We heard back in 2021 that The Coalition would switch to Unreal Engine 5 to produce “several new projects” in the acclaimed action series.

As series veterans know, Gears has a long history with the Unreal Engine – the first Gears of War title was famously developed by Epic and showcased the engine’s power on the Xbox 360, and it stands to reason that whatever comes next (Gears 6? Gears Tactics 2? Something else?) will be a benchmark game for the unproven Unreal 5 engine. We’ve already seen the studio show off its experiments with the engine with some pretty impressive facial tech demos, and we imagine there’ll be more of this teasing material to come in due course.

Will the next Gears project launch before other Unreal 5 confirmed games, Tomb Raider or The Witcher 4? At this point, who knows.

If you’re after these achievements, don’t worry: all related achievements linked to the map builder will now automatically unlock once when you launch the game with the latest update installed. This means that if you open the game from now on, you’ll get both I Made it All By Myself and Homegrown Hive.

If you already have these achievements, well done! Instead, you will receive an exclusive banner or 10,000 in-game coins for your efforts when you open the game.

Neither Microsoft nor The Coalition have officially announced any new projects at the time of writing, but we do know that one of them appears to be a new IP. Gears 5 developer focused on future projects
