George RR Martin says the long-awaited book The Winds Of Winter – part of the hugely popular Game Of Thrones series – will be “totally different” from the HBO TV show.
The American writer said there will be “new characters” appearing in the new novel and teased that not all characters that survive on screen do.
Writing about the ongoing writing process on his website, he said: “What I’ve noticed more and more of late is that my gardening (writing) is taking me further and further away from drama.
“Some of the things you’ve seen on HBO in Game of Thrones, you’ll also see in The Winds Of Winter (though maybe not in quite the same ways)… but much of the rest will be completely different.”
Martin says the difference is “inevitable” as his novel is “much larger and more complex than the series”.
“Certain things that happened on HBO won’t happen in the books. And vice versa,” he said.
When introducing new characters, he added that the book’s “main players” will “certainly… meet new people in lands far and near”.
He added: “I can say one thing, I’m not going to spoil anything in general: not all the characters that survive until the end of Game of Thrones will survive until the end. A Song of Ice and Fire, and not all of the characters who died in Game of Thrones will die in A Song of Ice and Fire.
“Certainly there will be some. Of course. Almost. But certainly not all.
“Of course, I could change my mind again next week, with the next chapter I write. It’s gardening.”
It comes after Martin reassured fans that the world of Westeros, in which the books are set, is his “number one priority” and will remain so “until the story is told”.
