Takei said he would “never forget” their first meeting and that Nicols was “awesome” with her natural “Afro” hair, “pride and glory”.

During his active career in the 1970s, he said, Nichols often appeared as a performer for dinners and fundraising campaigns, and hit “every major milestone” my dignity”.

“When my husband Brad and I got married, we asked Walter Koenig, who plays Chekov on the show, to be our best man at the wedding,” he wrote.

“We have asked Nichelle to be our honor guard. With her signature fashion sense, Nichelle declares, ‘I’m not a nice man! If Walter can be the best man, why can’t I be the lady? ‘

“Note that Walter’s title of ‘best man’ implies an awkward title of ‘best woman’, she is identified as ‘best woman’ to the guests. I said to her, “Of course you are.”

“She was always a curious spirit, so she asked me, ‘George, what are they bringing to the funeral?’

“I said it was friends and relatives who contributed financially to support funeral expenses. Nichelle had never heard of the Japanese tradition known as koden.

“A few days later, an envelope came from her. Inside was a check for $500, a very generous koden. “

He concluded, “So while fans will remember and honor the famous actress who opened so many avenues with her onscreen presence, I will also miss my dear friend, who always let you know she was there to support you, to love you, and to walk through this strange and wonderful life with you.

“Nichelle Nichols, you are one in a million people in so many ways.”
