Gerwyn Price shrugs off early troubles and advances to second round of World Matchplay

Gerwyn Price rebounded from an early deficit and clawed his way into the second round of World Matchplay with a 10-8 win over Martin Schindler at Blackpool.

The world number two, who broke his hand in March, won the first leg with an immediate break before his German debutant broke back with a 96 checkout in the 12-dart second leg.

The Welshman was soon fighting from behind, his rival making it 3-1 before Price regained his form and pressed D10 to seal a 15-dart fifth leg.

Price rose to 5-4 thanks to his opponent’s two wide misses at D8, but Schindler answered in the 10th leg, taking out 141 for the break after the break before two consecutive 11-darters gave Price a 9-7 advantage.

Schindler stayed in contention, winning his eighth leg with a 91 checkout on D16, but Price, who will face Dave Chisnall next, finally sealed his spot in the second round with a 99.78 average with eight highs.

An all-English duel opened proceedings at the Winter Gardens as Bedlington’s Chris Dobey sought his first World Matchplay victory over 2019 champion Rob Cross.

All was looking up for Dobey as he dominated the opening legs and found himself 8-2 before Cross hit 76 with two darts to retake the leg and start a great run with six wins to end proceedings at eight Legs to balance each piece.

Dobey responded with an 11-darter before Cross forced a tiebreak with a bullseye for a 74 checkout and eventually completed the 11-9 comeback to face Jose de Sousa in the second round.

The Portuguese native prevailed in a 10-6 win over Gabriel Clemens to hit his sixth maximum before ending the competition with a 136 checkout as the highest match and a 93.55 average.

Chisnall ended the evening setting up his clash with Price after edging out with Kim Huybrechts in a tight contest with wins in the last three legs to make it 10-7 and secure his place in the last 16 . Gerwyn Price shrugs off early troubles and advances to second round of World Matchplay
